Elkhorn High Adventure Base is located at over 7,200 feet on the Ben Delatour Scout Ranch near Red Feather Lakes, Colorado – Over 3,200 acres of Rocky Mountain Adventures are waiting for you. For your older Scouts, Varsity Scouts and Venturers, the Elkhorn High Adventure Base is true backcountry mountaineering experience.

Backpack thirty to fifty miles through the Roosevelt National Forest, Colorado State Forest and Parks and Rawah Wilderness while learning about mountaineering skills and practices.

Snow fields in July, the Milky Way at night, mountaintop memories to last a lifetime. Anyone can put on a backpack and head off on the trail, but it takes a trained staff and dedicated leadership to make a quality program. We bring hands on adventure to the Colorado Wilderness.

BASIC TREK OPTIONS

 

A Trek – BDSR High Adventure

Trek includes backpacking ground school, rock climbing, rappelling, high and low C.O.P.E., black powder rifle, Cowboy Camp and more. This trek stays on or near the Ranch property for the entire week. Crews will backpack 3-7 miles each day. Elevation: 7,000 – 8,000 feet

 

B Trek – BDSR/Sub-Alpine Adventure (by far the most popular)

Trek includes backpacking, peak ascent and can include rock climbing with ground school, rappelling, high C.O.P.E. or black powder if time permits.  This trek stays on or near the Ranch property for half of the week and is off Ranch property for the other half of the week (shuttle included). Crews will backpack 3-12 miles every day. Elevation: 7,000 – 12,000 feet

 

C Trek – Sub-Alpine Adventure

Trek includes up to a 50-mile backpack at the lower elevations in the surrounding area. Other than backpacking, and opening and closing campfire this trek does not include activities. This trek is off the Ranch for the entire week. (shuttle included). Crews will backpack over 10 miles per day. Elevation: 7.000 -12,000 feet

 

D Trek – Alpine Adventure (This trek now limited to crews with previous Elkhorn experience.)

Trek includes up to a 50-mile backpack at the higher elevations in the surrounding area. Other than backpacking, and opening and closing campfires this trek does not include any activities. This trek is off the Ranch for the entire week. (shuttle included). Crews will backpack over 10 miles per day. Elevation: 9,000 -12,000 feet. This trek can be very strenuous – crews must be experienced backpackers in excellent physical condition.

Elkhorn SuperTrek

This is a ten day backpacking adventure includes all the bells and whistles that your crew is looking for.  All program opportunities (listed above) are available with the addition of a white water rafting experience on one of the premier rafting rivers in the United States as well as an overnight horse pack trip on our beautiful 3200 acre Ranch.  SuperTreks always begin on Wednesday.

 

Online Trek Registration

Online Registration is available for scheduling your group’s specific trek and activities.
Please go to camper and select the trek you would like to do as well as any additional activities your group may like to participate in.

Instructions:
Sign into Camper and click the manage button next to EHAB 2014
Go to the roster Tab to bring up your list of scouts.
If you have not put your Scouts into the Roster you must do so in order to register for a trek.
Select the Adult Participants tab
Click on the Lead Adult for your group.
This will take you to a class scheduling page.
Schedule all of the activities under the Lead Adults name for the entire crew.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REGISTER EACH SCOUT FOR ACTIVITIES.
SCOUTS MAY NOT PARTICIPATE IN MULTIPLE ACTIVITES AT THE SAME TIME.
YOUR GROUP MUST STAY TOGETHER.

Super treks (10 Days) include an overnight with the horses as well as a whitewater rafting trip.
Regular (5 day) treks may also participate in these activities but must pay and additional fee. Pricing can be found on the online registration.

The Elkhorn High Adventure Base is one of four camps located on the Ben Delatour Scout Ranch. The program has been put together to take advantage of the magnificent location high in the Rocky Mountains of northern Colorado. Located just north of Rocky Mountain National Park, the Elkhorn High Adventure Base offers a unique experience for older Scouts to hike, camp, and climb in the Rocky Mountains.

At over 7,000 feet in elevation and encompassing more than 3,400 acres, BDSR serves as a perfect base camp for the Elkhorn High Adventure program. Each crew will spend five full days of high adventure activities such as backpacking, rappelling, rock climbing, black powder, C.O.P.E and tomahawk throwing.

Mission & Goals

The purpose of the Elkhorn High Adventure Base is to provide a unique High Adventure opportunity to members of the Scouting Program. Through this experience, develop a love of the outdoors and respect for nature.
The goals of the Elkhorn High Adventure Base are to provide Scouts, Scouters, Venturers a chance to graduate from the traditional Scout Camp experience. We offer a chance to put to use the years of training and experience they have received, in a physically and mentally challenging rugged wilderness setting. Finally, we hope to offer the opportunity for all of those involved in the program to gain a life-long love and respect for the natural environment.

Trek A – Program High Adventure

This trek combines a week-long backpacking trip in the lower elevations with daily program opportunities listed above. Great a Troop or Crew’s first trek and for those wanting to do more than hike the trail.

Trek B – Program Alpine Adventure
This trek includes the first half of the week at lower elevations to assist with altitude aclimatization and to provide significant program involvement from the program list above. The second half of the week is backpacking in the beautiful Colorado wilderness at altitudes of 7,000 to 12,000 feet.

Trek C – Sub Alpine Trek
This trek includes up to 50 miles of backpacking in the Colorado wilderness, with vistas above timberline. This trek will only operate during the second half of the season and is subject to alternate routes based on high-altitude snow depths.

Trek D – Ask about this one You also need to have been on an Elkhorn Trek in a previous season before we let you tackle this big one.

Elkhorn Supertrek

The Elkhorn SuperTrek was designed to give your crew a more diverse experience on the trail. The SuperTrek will check in and shakedown at Elkhorn High Adventure Base on Wednesday of their start week. The trek will hit the trail for 10 days and return on the Friday of their final week. This Trek requires a minimum of 8 and maximum 11 participants.

Programs you will participate in: Whitewater Rafting, Horseback Overnighter, High and Low COPE, Climbing, Rappelling, Black Powder Shooting, Tomahawk Throwing, Dutch Oven Cooking and Backpacking!

Only one SuperTrek will depart during each session, so get your reservation in early!

Requirements

Membership & Certification
All participants in Elkhorn High Adventure Base must currently be registered with the Boy Scouts of America. At least one adult crew member must be certified in first aid and CPR.

Health

All participants are expected to be in good physical and mental health. Elevations in this region of the Rockies range from 7,000 to 13,000 feet and the ruggedness of the trails should not be underestimated. All treks include strenuous hiking and backpacking. Individuals in poor health will not be allowed to participate.

Camp Medical Form

All campers, both youth and adult, are required to present Annual BSA Health and Medical Record, Parts A, B, and C signed by a physician within the past 12 months.

The Annual BSA Health and Medical Record, Part D is required to be reviewed by all participants and shared with the examining health-care provider before completing Part C.

Age

All participants in the Elkhorn High Adventure Base must be at least 13 by September 1 of the participation year. These are Longs Peak Council rules for our program and we do not make exceptions to this rule.

Adult Advisors

Each crew must have two adult leaders with them at all times. One adult leader must be 21 years of age or older by the time the crew leaves home. The other adult leader must be 18 years of age or older by the the time the crew leaves home. Based on BSA regulations, both adult leaders for Venture Crews are required to be 21 or older. Coed crews must follow BSA regulations for coed outings.

Crew Size

Crew size is strictly limited by wilderness permits and Leave No Trace practices. Full crews have a maximum of eleven participants (youth and adults). Minimum crew size is seven participants. At least two participants must be adults.
No pets (dogs, cats or otherwise) are allowed in any of the Longs Peak Council Camps.

Equipment

The Northern Rockies offer some challenging hiking terrain and it is essential that your personal and group equipment be up to the test. Snow sleet, and freezing temperatures are not unusual at higher elevations, and groupsnot properly outfitted will be restricted in their participation. Some group gear is issued to the crew on arrival. Personal gear is the responsibility of each individual. Patch - Camp StaffElkhorn Hike Rangers

During your trek you will be accompanied by an Elkhorn Hike Ranger. All Hike Rangers are over 18 years of age, and have been extensively trained in Leave No Trace camping skills and wilderness emergency skills. All of them have extensive backpacking experience and knowledge of the routes your crew will be taking. Additionally, Hike Rangers have been specifically trained in the local and natural history of the Northern Rockies in order to help your crew have a first rate experience.
